I Want To Homeschool Where Do I Start?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I will be homeschooling my son who would be going into 3rd grade this fall. What are the best programs for homeschooling? What would you suggest? Any other parent that has done homeschooling here?

I would highly encourage you to check out the Special Needs subforum on the Well-Trained Mind BBS. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/forum/32-spec...

Thank you all for your input, I've enrolled him in Time4learning for now since he is half way done with school and is all online and with worksheets and it keeps track of everything for legal purposes. I would love to hear from virtual charter school since as long as it's not structured cause I have to pace myself to his moods. I do live in the Chicago area so I guess I would qualify. Thanks again ya'll.

Hi. My son with Aspergers in enrolled in the Chicago Virtual Charter School. If you live in the city limits you should look into it. They use the K12 style. It has taken so much stress out of my sons life to not have to 'deal' with classroom issues on a daily basis. I would be happy to talk more if you have other questions.

Homeschoooling laws vary from state to state. Contact your states Dept. of Education to find out what the laws are where you live, what if any programs they offer (many states have a free or low cost program), and how to maintain special needs services through your district, speech therapy for example. After getting a better understanding in that area, the questions you really need to ask are of yourself and about your son. Do you want a school-at-home setting, relaxed but structured, interest led? What are his learning styles and strengths? What are his weaknesses? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Are you interested in a co-opor group? Are you looking for secular or faith based materials?

Making a list of your goals, strengths, interests, areas to work on and what you most want out of the experience can be very helpful in directing you to the best program/curriculum/group that mighy meet your needs. But don't feel bad if you make adjustments as you go along. We all do.

I've been homeschooling my kids since preschool. I now have a 6th grader, 2nd grader, and a toddler. I love it and am so glad we chose this route. You can read some of our experiences and craziness on my blog.
