My 13 year old son is in mainstream public school. He is in 7th grade but comprehension wise at 3rd grade level.
In his IEP we were told he would not be able graduate from high school to move on to college. After high school , if he can not move on to college but I want him to get some kind of job ,just so that I can help him to be independent in life , what can I do? Is there any institute that help kids in this area?
My sons life skills program in school gives the child co op placements to gain skills and yhen helps them find employment after high school. Have u checked with your school?
Here our more severe kids get occupational training once they hit middle school and high school. They are taught skills that would help them get a job, keep a job, shop, live in group homes, etc. After high school they an attend a group center that further teaches a skill and then eventually get placed in jobs.
Depending on the severity the school district is responsible for the child's education until the age of 22. In my daughters case who is nonverbal and on the severe side that is exactly the case. You may want to speak to an advocate in your area that is familiar with your state
I went through this with my son and still going through this. It's very hurtful. I feel some of the schools don't have the patient with special needs kids. Sorry I can't help but if someone knows please also tell me:(
