How Do You Deal With Violent Tantrums?

My 4 year old son with ASD has been getting increasingly violent with his tantrums (throwing things, breaking things, hitting, scratching, biting himself). I'm not sure what to do to help him when this happens and it seems like he loses all self control. What are somethings thy can help?
