Help - Aggressive And Violent Behavior
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My daughter is 9 with high functioning Aspergers and persistent depressive disorder. We have easily had at least 25 to 30 incident reports this year in school. I get a phone call at least twice a week from the school. She's been kicked out of three daycares since August. She does have aggressive and violent behavior however she never displays this behavior at home. It has only been in the daycare and school settings. We currently have a section 504 plan in place in the school is currently in… read more

If she doesn't display that behaviour at home then it sounds like she can't cope with the environment or the demands at school and special ed might be part of the solution. Not sure about luquid meds but abilify works great for mood swings in some people. Have the doctors ruled out bipolar disorder? I ask because you mentioned persistent depressive disorder. We had to look at that possibility with my son because of a family history.

Ability not only helps depression but it is also prescribed for schizophrenia that from my understanding is for the behavioral problems. My son takes that and Clonidine to help him sleep at night. He is now 17 years of age.

Yes bipolar is difficult to diagnose in children much because behavioural issues can look a lot like adhd, autism. Yes bipolar could present itself with violent and aggressive behaviour and would most likely also present with the opposite being very cuddly, loving, on top of the world kind of kid.....and every emotion in between. My son is a lot like that too but not so much now that he's a little older. They have ruled bipolar out for him. Are there any other things your daughter struggles with? Night terrors, uncontrollable fits of crying etc?

Is it difficult to diagnose and children? Can aggressive and violent behavior manifest from bipolar disorder? I will say my daughter is an extremist...she's zero or a hundred, there's no in between. When she's sweet she's sweet as can be but when she's mean she's mean as can be. I wonder if bipolar disorder in a child on the spectrum is common or not so common, I might have to look that up later.
