What Has Been Your Experience With Church With Your Children Who Have Autism?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

What has been your experience with church with your children who have autism? Have you found accepting churches? Or have you been burned by bad experiences? If so, what can churches do better to include your family?

Thank you all for your answers! I am humbly blessed to be part of a church that has a ministry for families such as all of yours. I've asked this question because I know that not all churches are the same and I am curious to learn of other experiences. I can't say I know how any of you feel, as I am not even a parent myself but I encourage you to not give up! Go to church! You AND your child will benefit from it! Working with these children I have seen how God has worked through them even when it seems like they don't understand it. Their understanding might be a little different than our own but God is stronger than we can fathom...He can certainly use the Holy spirit to teach your child! Praying for you all that your good experiences may continue and that others who haven't great experiences will be blessed in finding what works for your family's spiritual growth.

Again, thank you for all of your answers!

@A MyAutismTeam Member:: I don't mean to come off disrespectful but what do you care about what other people think? If other families are bothered by your lil girl then they can either have the decency to approach you and learn or THEY don't have to attend church. Why let them decide when you go. This isn't elementary school, where cliques get to bully you and make you feel inferior. The other people need to pull the pole out of their arse' and learn to deal. Ok... Rant over. Lots o' huggs

Jesus said to bring the children. I don't believe he meant just the "well-behaved" typical ones. It's been hard, we take Colin out of the sanctuary for the sermon, but he has a right to be there for Divine Liturgy and communion and I will not compromise on that. Although, we are exhausted by the end of church...gives new meaning to the hymn, "The strife
is o'er the battle is won." Definitely hasn't been easy and we are still fumbling through it. Still thinking about what would make it easier. I don't want my church to change for my child just to love and be gracious to him (and they have, so far.) I guess it would be helpful maybe to educate the congregation and arrange for a pew in the sanctuary with a plexi-glass sound proof wall with the service broadcasted in ;)

I truly do understand not wanting to be a bother to others around you. Since I work in a church where Kids ministry is available at every service, parents do not need to take their children into service with them. As we integrate our students into their typical kids ministry class we do sometimes have to remove students when their behaviors are distracting to the other kids. @A MyAutismTeam Member you are absolutely right! Our church has definitely noticed the need because people keep coming and the word is being spread! I'm happy that you guys are part of a church that is rich with your families heritage!

When my son was smaller my church used to let us sit in a soundproof classroom. This way I could come to church and not worry about him making noise. As he got older I started attending Saturday mass and now because he has to go to the bathroom constantly because of Crohn's disease, I attend Saturday mass while he is at his day program.
