Moving Back To The U.S. - Will My Son Have To Be Re-diagnosed?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello,
This is my very first post on this very helpful site, so glad to have found it! After living in Europe for almost 12 years, we are moving back to the states this summer. Both my kids were born over here so of course my son was diagnosed in Germany and not in the states. Does anyone know if his diagnosis is accepted when we move back or do I have to get him re-diagnosed to get an IEP and all that jazz? Any tips would be sooo appreciated!

Also, if you can find an Advocate that specializes in autism to sit in the IEP meeting with you, it may help to get the most you can from the school district for your child. Some states are better than others for autism services. But if you are not familiar to what is available from the school district you are headed to, it may be worth the money to have an advocate come with you to help out. Schools typically do not offer up that info if they don't have to... http://www.autismspeaks.org/family-services/com...

I do not think you are going to need a new diagnosis but you are going to need an evaluation from the school district you enter into. They would ask for that just switching towns let alone countries

Hi there! Just moving from one state to another, I had to get a new eval. done by the new school. They accepted his IEP but we had a meeting to make modifications to it because they were actually able to offer him more services. I suppose it depends on the school district and their requirements. Best wishes, travel safe!!

No Problem! I am still learning myself, but I am happy to help.

Thanks SAmommyof2! Your advice is so helpful to me. I am almost clueless as for as how to navigate with the school in the U.S. I will definitely look into having an Advocate with me. :-)
