Recently there was a documentary on DFH about children with Autism. I was wondering if other parents have any opinions about it. My child is not so severely affected as the children shown and I kind of felt that they did an injustice but only showing the severe and disturbing parts.
Any opinion you have is welcome. Even if you disagree with me.
Is there a link for this show?
I don't see adults with autism losing their independence unless there's some big shift back to institutionalization. It's more likely at worst they will be left on the streets as we currently leave the homeless to themselves unless they are a major threat to themselves or others.
I get worried that cute kids with autism grow up to be adults and get less help or sympathy as the as parents get older and can no longer support their kids and the public gets a taste of the true costs involved.
@A MyAutismTeam Member Thanks for answering. I did feel it was right for them to show the tantrums. For awhile my son had them almost as severely. While he still acts out sometimes, he no longer destroys his room. I appreciated when the interviewer asked if they should quit filming that his mother said "No". But this show worried me as well. All the children were shown to be such loose cannons. I wish they had shown some children who do not act so violently. It wouldn't have been such a compelling show maybe, but would have been a fairer representation of the disorder.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I worry if too many people only see docs on the extreme (even Nicky was extreme with threatening to stab someone) that people on the spectrum might start losing their rights to independence as they get older.
I'm gonna take a look at the links you posted. Have a good day.
I thought they did a decent job of showing three different stories of how varied the autism spectrum can be:
Nicky: Autistic and Talented
Autistic Twins
Joey Has an Outburst
My daughter will probably never be at Nicky's level but from my perspective that's how many people see autism because more of the less severe cases are now more likely to get a dx than was the case in the past. Personally, I'm glad you posted the subject and the link because I have seen a lot of Youtube clips on autism and hadn't seen the "Twins" or "Nicky" segment.
I saw the one on "Joey" before and it is disturbing but I salute his parents for wanting the public to know what some families are going through. It wasn't some act or show for the benefit of Discovery camera crew so it was more real than "reality TV". My daughter isn't like Joey either but I'm more worried about widespread complacency in what been widely termed an epidemic of autism than people squirming in their sofas at kids like Joey.
I took a look at other autism focused shows on Discovery Fit and Health and I've never heard of nor seen this channel before.
The first link is a quick overview of autism and the others of the family of 6 autistic kids- wow.
