My 11 yr old son is taking a lot of meds. Is on 1200 mg lithium a day, 1000 mg depakote a day, .01 mg clonidine 3 at night, and 5 mg resperidone a day. Have had to call police every other week for help because he says he wants to die and tries to hurt himself. He has been in 2 psychiatric hospitals in the past month and they keep increasing meds. The state has now become involved and wants to take custody of him to try to get him off these meds. Is anyone out there dealing with the same… read more
I am so sorry you are having these problems it is tough when a child is in a situation like that. The problem is that the system is broken and they do not know how to deal with situations like this. You ask for help and then they try to do what you are describing. If they keep increasing meds then I do not see why they would not keep him at the hospital to monitor him more. It seems like he needs more therapy time along with a different combination of meds because what he is on is not working well.
I do not know how it works in your state but when we were having issues with our daughter they were going to keep her in the hospital for 30-45 days to get things under control. Fortunately for us we did not have to go to that we found what therapy and med combination would work to get her under control. From there we had to place her in residential schooling where she has been for the last year and a half and has made huge improvements. We have her home on the weekends and extra time on holidays but other than that she has 24/7 care. Our daughter is thriving and as hard as it was to make that choice it was the best thing we could have done.
You need to intervene now because the longer you wait the worse it gets for the child. They will hurt themselves or someone else and as they get bigger and stronger it gets far worse, I wish you the best of luck and hope things work out, but do not let the state dictate what you do, the school district is responsible for this sort of thing in most states I would force them to help you out.
He has been diagnosed with bipolar. I have told everyone he is not on the right meds and they won't change them. They only seem to keep him in hospital for 7 days at the most.
I would assume it is up to you to decide on which meds to try (or not) and which ones are not working and should be weaned off. Does he have seizures or bipolar disorder? Both lithium and depakote dosage seem bit high to me. If using off label, the clinical dosage only makes sense if the efficacy was enough to justify the side effects/risks.
Maybe bring some chocolate covered almonds with you everytime you want to ty to share a happy moment with him chocolate creates a little happiness and nuts and dairy.
I wish it was as easy as a heart to heart talk where you could just talk about his trama pain and why or what gothim like that having him depressed suicidal etc.... like that im going through the same issue with my brother that is autistic and skitzo maybe the psych evslustion can help you prove to the state that his behavior is all part of autism or skitzophrenia or his depression by having a written letter provong his disabilities from the physician.
