How do you deal with a child who is suffering from anxiety? I don't know what to do to help my 6year old autistic son who is dealing with anxiety
I agree with the above sometimes the supliments work but if they don't meds will do the trick. Our son is on adderall and he does really well with it with no side effects. We have had to increase the dosage as he has gotten older but it works great. It is also out of their system very quickly and we know it works because if he does not take it you know within a few hours. The antidepressants work as well but if you are afraid of them because they do stay in the system for a while a drug like Adderall is best.
Our son suffers from anxiety. Prior to his autism diagnosis, we tried everything. About six months into his diagnosis, his doctor ended up putting him on a very small dose of Zoloft. I don't want to imply that there is a magic pill, however, this was EXTREMELY helpful. He was happy, laughing and able to get through a school day without crawling under a table. Also, I should add that prior to Zoloft, the anxiety was so bad that it was difficult for the therapists / teachers / etc. to work on any other coping techniques with him. Again, I don't want to say, "put him on this and it will fix everything." For us, it was more like, "Let's put him on this until we can get other areas under control and then reassess."
Look into mendability, epsom salt baths, get massages and other relaxation techniques
I would try to treat it if possible whether cognitive therapy, natural remedies (dozens of these) or mild meds (tenex) or all of the above.
Also figure out if any allergies as that is linked to anxiety as well and treatment/approach is different for that (anti histamine such as ketotifen).
@A MyAutismTeam Member, I noticed this was a year ago...just wondering if you found anything that helped?
