My daughter is 2.5. She got diagnosed with autism at 19 months by a neurologist. We are currently doing ABA, OT, ST, PT, biomedical treatments, gluten/casein free diet and attend music and a mommy class. I'm wondering if I should take her to a developmental pediatrician. Our DAN doctor told us she has moderate autism and agree, but would like to see what the developmental pediatrician would say. I don't know if she does other assessment that would give me more information about my child.
For us, a developmental pediatrician was not very helpful. I would think that the benefit would really depend on what doctor you saw. Ours just gave us my son's diagnosis, made suggestions for possible therapies, and subsequently offered some medications that we chose not to use. I would be interested in other's thoughts, but we have seen much more benefit from seeing an integrative doctor (an MD that has additional training in biomedical treatment and nutritional approaches). IMO, your DAN doctor is more likely to address the issues that are at the root of your daughter's challenges, whereas traditionally-trained developmental pediatricians are likely to be able to provide a label, maybe a medication or two to treat symptoms, but not so much help with underlying biomedical issues. Hope that is not too insulting to all of the developmental pediatricians out there.... that was just our experience.
I would slow down - wait to add a service when one is done. dont want to overload your kid or you. You are doing a great job helping your child - your well informed and pro-active. Well done!!!!!
