4yr Old Non-verbal Grandson Pinching And Trying To Bite Adults At Preschool
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

When my 4yr old non-verbal grandson gets frustrated at his preschool he trys to pinch or bite. Has anyone out there successfully dealt with this
He used to pinch me when I wouldn't give him or do something he wanted (food) (DVD) for example. I would put him in his room alone and wait until he was calm. It seemed to lessen the aggression. Now he very seldom pinches me if at all. I think when teachers and aides at school make demands on him--like seat work, etc.--is when he gets mad and… read more

My first question would be what kind of preschool is it, the reason I ask is because if this is a regular preschool they are often not capable of handling behavior issues and this is what this is. ABA would be helpful and redirecting is needed as well but you are going to need someone trained for it to work well. If this is a regular preschool they will only handle things so long before they try to kick you out. Sorry to be negative but this is what happens a lot.

If you can work with the behavior at home that would be great but oftentimes the children act differently depending on where they are. Sometimes home is better than school sometimes school is better than home. If you have not done so already you need to have an IEP meeting to talk about this. If the child does not have an IEP you need an evaluation so you can get one. Things like this will get worse if not addressed.

I read the other posts and saw that. I agree with the recommendation of the Functional Behavior Analysis. Hopefully your district can provide that.

All great points above. And I can attest that your child will get kicked out eventually. You are right about the root of the behavior, but not every preschool can address the unique needs of children with ASD and how their inability to effectively communicate can result in situations escalating quickly.

I will look into that. Have heard a lot about the diet thing in other posts. We may need to try it though there are differing views. Thanks so much for your input!!!
