How Do We Tell My Sons Girlfriend He Has Aspergers
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 16 and was just diagnosed with Aspergers. He has been dating a girl for 2 years, but she lives over a hour away. Since they hardly see each other she doesn't realize the extent of his symptoms. My husband and I are extremely nervous on how to tell her and her parents the news. As anyone had experience in this? It will crush him if she breaks up with him because of this.

I would leave that decision to your son. 16 is a little too old for mom to disclose information like that without his consent, from a 16 year old's point of view anyway. I would be afraid you might permanently damage your relationship / trust with him if you were to say something and preserving that is so much more important than a girlfriend or parents knowing about his ASD.

I would leave it up to your son. Aspergers is just a word it doesn't define who your son is. Ok he has ocd, well a lot of people have ocd, he doesn't like crowds, great more time for one on one time.
The glass is half full not half empty. Every little quirk he has, he can work on and who knows maybe she likes his little quirks,
Every mother doesn't want her son to get hurt but it is part of life, my son had his first girlfriend this year and he learned to work through the heart ache. From one mother to another with your son's starting to really date, I am just as nervous, afraid, excited and every kind of emotion all wrapped up into one. Teenage years, I wish I could turn back time.
