Ideas For Behavior Intervention Plans For Aspergers And Bipolar Disorder
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello everyone, I was hoping I could reach out to this great community for any behavior intervention suggestions. I have a review ARD tomorrow for my 10 year old daughter that's in 5th grade. She has aspergers and bipolar disorder however the school has qualified her for special-education services under emotionally disturbed. The thing is for the most part I know her triggers at home but at school I'm not there with her so I can offer suggestions from what we do at home but it doesn't always… read more

Having an aide might be appropriate for her safety if she is leaving the classroom. My son had an aide and he sometimes would get very stressed in class--i.e. yelling, banging, really losing control-- and needed to leave the classroom so he could self-soothe. He had a designated spot where he could go near the classroom The aide would watch but hang back from him so he could slowly unwind, de-stress and get his composure back. Then a few minutes later, he would be fine and they would return to the classroom. I suggested this method to the school psychologist based on my experience with my son at home and the psychologist was quite surprised but very pleased with how well it worked. It reduced distraction to the other students and limited his embarrassing himself in front of them. It also cut down on his episodes of stress. This method put my son in charge of getting his stress and emotions under control and it has since helped him in coping with stress in most situations.

Can school do a Functional behavioral analysis to see what triggers her behavior and have a positive plan to support her? I talked with someone that used an inclusion therapist for her child. The child had a place that he could go and sit when he was overwhelmed. I am not sure if that can create another problem but maybe an idea. Does she receive social work at school so she can talk about her frustration?

Sounds like the school is eating her for breakfast. You may want to try a different school. Also, is she medicated right? I ask because I too am aspergers and bi-polar. I recently went through the wrong medication hell.
