Help! My 14-yr-old Son Has Severe Pica!
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 14, and has been eating (mainly) his clothing for at least the past 5 years, but it is progressively getting worse. He started picking at his socks and eating the strings. Then it was shirts, pants, underwear, shoes, you name it. Now it is an everyday occurrence, sometimes eating half a shirt sleeve throughout a day. Try to get help with his ABA team! If he is getting one or talk to a Psychiatrist!

My child did this and still does from time to time. It was/is due to a severe iron deficiency.

Thanks for the responses. Wind chill is -25 in northern Michigan, but we have tried stripping him down in various forms, sometimes down to his underwear. That's when we found out he'll eat his underwear, too. If we take away one piece of clothing, he'll turn his attention to the others. He has a tough time dismantling brand new jeans--he starts down at the bottom of the leg. The school tried those "indestructible" chewy toys--he ate them. They sent them back and got their money back. I don't think he's doing it because he's hungry. He's eating about 6-7 times a day. I'm clueless as to what to do next.
