Guilt
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm really struggling with the notion I did something wrong during my pregnancy that caused Madison to be autistic. .We don't know anyone in our families that have it...so how is it genetic. ..when do you...or do you ever get over the guilt? Maybe I ate something. .touched something. ..I'm due with a baby boy in 5 wks...petrified. .can't stop wondering if he will be okay. When does this guilty thinking stop???

I'm so sorry for your guilt. I felt the same way for a while until my son became part of a study at UCSD which proved that his autism is more about genetics and begins during the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. The actual cause is currently unknown, but it's not you, love. I know some moms who were uber healthy during their pregnancy and some that were down right awful...obese, smokers, high fat diets and their children have the same diagnosis. You...WE did not do this. The best frame of thought, I find, is not the "why"...it's the "how". How can I help my baby have the best life. How can I make sure he is not limited to his diagnosis. I pray your guilt is replaced with peace. Best of luck to you!!

Hi, please don't feel guilty, autism has nothing to do with us as parent doing something wrong on our pregnancy , I was the same way but I have done a lot to find out a cause and so far there is no answer... So enjoy your son, support him to become better and don't feel guilty.... Try all kind of Terapy there is and you'll see ur soon will be much better... My son was non verbal and in 3 years of aba he communicate a lot...:))) I hope this help.

My late wife felt the same way. Like you, we have no obvious family history. I kept reassuring her that she was a great mom, and did all the right things. We eventually got a genetic diagnosis that clarified things, but the answer is the same. Be confident in your parenting, your kids will need your strength. Congrats on your new baby boy!!

I know how you're feeling, my son was born 7 weeks premature & I was sure it was because I did something wrong. I carried my first one to full term but not my 2nd. Hoping you'll find a way to let go of the guilt & focus on being there for your kids.
