Has Anyone Experienced Selective Mutism With Their Child?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is in prek3, He's very smart but doesn't talk at all at school. It seems like he freezes up. When he comes home he talkes non stop. I've done a little research on my own, and it seems like he has selective mutism. Has anyone else experienced this with their child?

He's just shy. It won't affect anything when he grows up. I never talked at ALL in school and am fine.

Thanks @A MyAutismTeam Member. That will be my next step to find a child psycholist.

I would suggest speaking with a child psychologist if you are really concerned. ASD kids can vary in terms of the desire and need to speak. And I bet there could be stressors in the school environment that do not exist in the home environment which could contribute.

Ours is mostly nonverbal, but can speak when we pull speech out of him or he has a desire he is not getting met.
