Potty Training
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 5 years old and is on the spectrum. For the past year I have been trying to potty train him and he is showing no interest. I am at my wits end and I know that I can receive a script for Medicaid to pay for them, but I don't even know how to go about that. Any advice will help.

Hi,
Our son is five as well and we are struggling with potty training, its improving but we have been trying for past year as well. Ask for incontinence care from your doctor they will write a prescription and then the diapers are shipped to your home. We have medicad for our son, and we were told after 4 years of age that Medicad pays for it and they do. Also try putting a wet cloth on your son and see if he can tell you if it is wet. Start at his back with a wet and dry one, ask him if he can identify if the cloth is wet or dry. And move down his body repeating wet or dry. He may not be able to tell the difference and sometimes this helps. Also look at a potty training watch you can get them online, it has a alarm you can set to help remind him. Hope this helps.

How did the probiotic help? I'm curious. We have the same dilemma. Nothing is working and absolute no interest despit the nanny, myself, school, OT, ST - everyone one board to help. games, toys, candy, interest, whatever is not helping. We have been trying for 2 yrs. Visual schedules, stories, games, youtube videos, books. What else?

Depend on his diagnostic, you can try what I did when my son was showing non interest. While at home o let him to use just underwear and short. After he got Web and dirty like 10 times he start telling me that he need the bathroom. Keeping the pampers while at home is not a good idea, just for sleep is good until he learn the other part. Listen, it's important the diagnostic . I'm talking about my with asperger and higher IQ. Good look

My son had no interest whatsoever and we struggled quite a bit. we read books and specific asd potty training things but at the end of it my wife and daughter just stayed with my in-laws for a few days and I kept him in clothes and shadowed him the whole time it took him a day to go and by the end of the weekend he got it. I put a stool by the toilet to reinforce his sense of gravity, a weighted vest helped him and I gave him marshmallows when he went. He has very little verbal ability but i just kept reinforcing and let him know to not be ashamed of accidents. he still needed a diaper to sleep for another year.

Just call the number on your card and they can tell you where to go from there, the way I did it was to contact a medical supply company directly, I use j and b medical, and they got the ball rolling with medicaid for me, it was pretty quick and easy
