I was told my youngest would be non verbal. I bought the book called Baby Signs (or something like that) and photocopied all the pages. I tapped them to a large wall in our kitchen. We used… read more

Is It Confusing For People With Nonverbal Autism To Be Exposed To Sign Language And Pictures?.......
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son's teacher told me he did not want to sign today. He did not want to sign over Spring Break but frequently grabbed my hand and brought it to the item...... He has been working on signs since August. He has picked up 3, but they are trying to use about 7 and I worry it may be too much for him. When he was 4 or so, I felt like he was making really good progress with pictures. His private speech therapist changed jobs and his insurance did not approve an ACC device and he regressed..... How Does An 11 Yr Old Autistic Boy Communicate When The School He Attends Has Not Taught Him Sign Lauguage Or Any Thing
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My grandson is 11yrs old. He understands me perfectly when I speak to him. But he is non verbal. He hasn't been taught sign language or anything like that. Doesn't carry a laptop to type anything. He gets mad when I cant figure out what he wants or needs. He doesn't live with me but visits me every other weekend. I feel so frustrated. Then I start to think how he must feel. Is this typical with non verbal autistic children to not teach them any way to communicate

With a nonverbal child , it’s important to give your child a choice. You find every means to give that child language . I chose sign language first. Why? It’s part of his body. Portable. The deaf… read more

For Anyone Who Has Used PECS Did It Work And Help With Communication Or Is There Something Else That May Work Better?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been thinking about starting PECS but not sure where to begin. I am confused on how to start and a little overwhelmed with all the stages. I want to try but for the first stage you apparently need two people and I am not sure if that would be possible. Also confused if you need to be doing PECS all day or if you can take breaks?

Several of my friends have done this with their kids with great success! I've done sign language and visual calendars and social stories. There's so much that's online and free!

Hello this is NOT a question about my child/ren.

Non-verbal
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Trying to find other parents which children are also non-verbal like my daughter. Trying to just get advicence, recommendations, and ideas from them. My daughter having austism has been hard on me but the hardest part is her not talking at all. She only makes noises and even though I have figured out what's going on with her based on the tone of the noises she is making and using process of elimination. It's still very difficult especially when I see her upset at me because I just don't know… read more
