I agree
I was told my youngest would be non verbal. I bought the book called Baby Signs (or something like that) and photocopied all the pages. I tapped them to a large wall in our kitchen. We used… read more
My son's teacher told me he did not want to sign today. He did not want to sign over Spring Break but frequently grabbed my hand and brought it to the item...... He has been working on signs since August. He has picked up 3, but they are trying to use about 7 and I worry it may be too much for him. When he was 4 or so, I felt like he was making really good progress with pictures. His private speech therapist changed jobs and his insurance did not approve an ACC device and he regressed..... Hi Allison! My daughter was diagnosed with non verbal autism at 4, and will be 10 soon. Learning to sign was a bit tricky for her too and pictures really helped. Thankfully we were approved for a AAC… read more
My grandson is 11yrs old. He understands me perfectly when I speak to him. But he is non verbal. He hasn't been taught sign language or anything like that. Doesn't carry a laptop to type anything. He gets mad when I cant figure out what he wants or needs. He doesn't live with me but visits me every other weekend. I feel so frustrated. Then I start to think how he must feel. Is this typical with non verbal autistic children to not teach them any way to communicate
With a nonverbal child , it’s important to give your child a choice. You find every means to give that child language . I chose sign language first. Why? It’s part of his body. Portable. The deaf… read more
I have been thinking about starting PECS but not sure where to begin. I am confused on how to start and a little overwhelmed with all the stages. I want to try but for the first stage you apparently need two people and I am not sure if that would be possible. Also confused if you need to be doing PECS all day or if you can take breaks?
Several of my friends have done this with their kids with great success! I've done sign language and visual calendars and social stories. There's so much that's online and free!
Hello this is NOT a question about my child/ren.
I am just curious if there is anyone out there who's nonverbal child signs fluently? Meaning they have many many words (including attributes/adjectives, adverbs) and signs in complete sentences?
My question is not if sign language is taught or what else is there...just curious to see if there is even a single non-verbal person with autism who was taught sign as an communication method who… read more
Trying to find other parents which children are also non-verbal like my daughter. Trying to just get advicence, recommendations, and ideas from them. My daughter having austism has been hard on me but the hardest part is her not talking at all. She only makes noises and even though I have figured out what's going on with her based on the tone of the noises she is making and using process of elimination. It's still very difficult especially when I see her upset at me because I just don't know… read more

My almost 8 year old daughter is completely nonverbal. She has been to 2 different speech therapists. The first told me she was so severe she didnt know what to do to help her. The second we had for 4 years before deciding to move on. Any suggestions for speech therapists who have posistive experience with nonverbal kiddos with autism? Thanks for any suggestions!
her old therapist tried PECS for 4 years. She threw in a tiny bit of sign language, but she wasnt having any success with it either.
My four-year-old with autistic disorder screams unctontrollably when she's angry or aggravated. I have been trying for years to teach her that I can help her if she TELLS me what's wrong, but that I can't understand her when she's screaming. The screaming is so loud and so frequent, my patience gets worn out so quickly. I want to help her, but I can't seem to communicate with her. BTW, she is verbal and can speak in sentences (lots of echolalia, though.) I know she CAN tell me what's wrong… read more
