Scared Of Switching From School To ABA
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My child has been in public school since she was 3 (with very limited progress). She is 7 compeltely non verbal and severely autistic. Insurance has finally allowed her to have ABA. She's now in the 2nd grade and I'm sure loves music and lunch time with other kids etc. But now I have the opportunity to do 40 hours a week of ABA in a new center in town. I'm now having second thoughts. Is it worth it? Will this help her at such a late age? Should I fight for part time school part time ABA? She… read more

What do you have to lose? I figure my 6 year old daughter will probably be in special ed for her entire schooling so we gave ABA a shot for seven months. The insurance company won't pay for anything in ABA that sounds like education so it's all behaviorial therapy. My daughter is verbal and she's stuck in a class with all boys who I think are less or non-verbal so my daughter wants out. It also bothers me that they can't "educate" her which seems dumb as the therapist to "patient" ratio is low so they can tailor the class to each kid. All of these places should remember they are there to help kids so act that way.

Personally, wish my kid was in ABA from age 3 to kindergarten or 1st grade but ABA wasn't available in Georgia unless you've got $40K to pay or one of the lucky few who has insurance that covers ABA. We are looking long-term and think my daughter may not have a lot of options in life so we are front loading all the education and therapy she can get now because she may be stuck at home so she'll have a lot of free time to do whatever later. The reality for us is that we don't live our lives constantly educating her because it isn't easy and she has a short attention span with the ADHD as well. She wastes time looking at the IPhone for YouTube videos so she has her share of free time now.

We just started ABA with compliance training for my 26 year old daughter that is classic autism. In a few months my daughter has started taking walks, washing, drying, folding and hanging her clothes up and putting her dishes in the dishwasher. So my point is trying ABA is worth it to my family. I hope it works for you and your daughter as well.
