Do We Send Our Autistic Son To Public School?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

what do we do as far as school? our son explodes and is very disruptive, i can not picture him in that environment at all. we just moved here to Alabama and it is much different than where we lived previously. getting everything set up again is overwhelming. and on top of it all my wife recently lost her job because our car broke....we live in a tiny town and we just don't know where to start here? any input is greatly appreciated.

After kindergarten we chose to homeschool because he was very anxious going to school. He is now in 7th grade. Not at grade level academically but still a very bright and intelligent boy. We are very close and homeschool with my younger daughter too.

If you don't like these, I've got a ton more :-).

I forgot the most important thing, GET A GOOD ADVOCATE, SOMEONE TO HELP YOU! Someone from the local early intervention group?

Start talking to other parents in the community to see if they are happy with the services their child is getting, what do they like, what do they not like. See of the local autism support services can hook you up with other parents. Know what you are in for (or not) before you go into your child's IEP (individualized education plan meeting where it is decided what services your child will get, how much, delivered by what staff, with what modification and accomodations, etc to create the IEP, which is a legal document and the school is bound to in terms of delivering the services agreed upon in the IEP). If you feel it may be diffiuclt to get what your child needs, start creating 'your' Team. People who will support the needs for your child, as you see it, in the IEP meeting as well as provide written recommendation. The early intervention people your child works with, the pediatrician, anybody you have hired privately that has worked with your child, who EVER you want that can provde whatever support you want and might need. A neuropsych eval from a neuropsych who specializes in autism carries tremendous weight because unless they have their own specialist of equal or greater qualifications, they will not be able to dismiss the recommendations contained in the report. Get a neuropsychological evaluation from a neuropsych who is VERY experienced in autism and familiar with ABA-VB intervention therapy (ABA is the only empirically validated intervention for effectively treating autism) who will make VERY precise intervention recommendation (what, how much, amount of traning for therapist and teachers providing intervention, etc.), Anytime they say 'no', 'can't do that', etc. ask WHY? Know why they have said no. (It will be very valuable for future advocacy). Not having enough staff, the correctly trained staff, or simply "that is not the program we offer here" is an innapproppriate and ILLEGAL response, UNLESS they offer you placement elsewhere. (It is ok for them to say they don't think your child needs what you think your child needs - that is where the neuropsych and other professional recommendations come in handy. Good luck and god bless you and your family.
