A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone ever been told that your child is tongue tied?
If so what do you do about it

An easy way to check is to have the child extend their tongue out far, you can contrive a situation like making silly animal impressions that involve sticking out the tongue or putting something sticky like peanut butter, ice cream, or yogurt on a spoon and asking them to lick with their tongue. If the tip looks like a heart towards the center rather then a point, its usually is an indication that the 'tie' that runs under the tongue is short or tight. This can have an effect when nursing a baby and a strong latch cannot be made, this is when it is usually spotted and corrected if it prevents baby from feeding. Bottle feeding is usually easier for babies with a tongue tie since they don't need to suck quite so hard to get a mouth full of milk. Later down the line, the issue can come in to play sometimes with developing speech issues, if the child is having a hard time fully extending his/her tongue for certain sounds. My son's early intervention speech therapist explained this to us and from time to time she would have the little kids all stick out their tongues during snack time in case she noticed any cases that seemed potentially troublesome for speech issues.
