I have this dream...my son is only 9, but I am already looking into his future and having this dream for him. I saw an article recently about an apartment complex in PA that is specifically for high-functioning adults on the spectrum. I can't stop thinking about that. How much I would love for him to, some day, be able to live independently, have a job he loves, be a contributing member of his community, have friends that understand and support him. This is absolutely something my wife and I think about constantly. I believe if something like you're describing existed in our area, it could be a huge benefit for our son and countless others. Since it doesn't exist (so far, anyway,) our plans for the future currently involve searching for a house with a detached mother-in-law apartment that would allow our son to live "on his own" and handle as much independence as he can, while still being close enough for us to help him whenever it's needed. As for work, he has a number of highly marketable skills that we're trying very hard to help him turn into some sort of self-employment. We would be willing and able to run the business and handle customer interactions for him, leaving him to do the actual work and earn an income through his efforts.

stephanieh, that's exactly what I have in mind! places within the sustained community where people can work, but also partnering with local businesses so those who chose to can work in a integrated environment. I don't want them to be isolated from NT people, because I know they have so much value to add no matter who they are with... where are you located?
