Well tonight my son had his first night terror, and it was terrifying for us both. But since the discovery of my son being autistic, I don't know what I should do when these happen. When I realized he was having them, all I did was sing to him and rocking him while he screamed, hit, pushed, and cried. I was always told to not wake a child who was having a night terror....is there anything else I can do for him?
I'm not sure I understand why you would not wake a child, or anyone, having a nightmare. When I have a terrifying dream and my wife wakes me up , after a second of adjustment I feel a relief.
Ask yourself where you got this idea of not waking someone? If it was a relative or anyone other than a physician, consider it in the category of 'old wives' tales.
My older daughter had night terrors it was very hard to watch and all I did was make sure she didn't get hurt and talk softly. Big hugs
