What should I do? It's only been 2 days and I figure that maybe he just needs to get used to her but he won't even get close to her.
That is some progress which is really good.It seems like he is afraid that she will hurt him. Also, he cannot expect what the dog will do too. Unlike the cat, he knows, oh if I pet the cat, she'll purr or something but what happens when I pet the dog? It's all part of the routine and not knowing. I think it's a great start of him throwing the ball being on the bed. He knows he is safe there until he knows what to expect from the dog. I think once he understands the dog and their routine together things will get better. It's just going to take time. I would still try to show him pictures on how to walk/care for the dog even though you say he's 3, it's visual and something he can associate it with the dog. Just like you named the dog after a character he can relate to. Our kids understand a lot more then we think they do. :)
Maybe it's to active that's why when you hold her it's not as bad
I'd say yes that is progress keep up the good work and go slow
She is a puppy. I was afraid to rescue an older dog in case it lashed out from prior experiences with owners and children. My cat has always been there since before he was born. He doesn't mind the puppy when she's laying but freaks out when she walks around. She doesn't make much noise other than when he screams, she barks. My son is only 3 so I don't think he'll understand if I explain to him how to take care of the dog. I named her Everest after paw patrol (he loves that show) so he could relate to her in some way. He loves to throw her the ball when there's a barrier between them and he likes to sit on the bed while she runs around it because he knows she can't reach him. And then when she walks away he goes to the door and says "puppyyyy" for her to come back so he can race to get on the bed before she reaches him. But he hates if she gets near him. I made him touch her today by holding his hand with mine (which he hated doing) and after that he poked her once.... so that's some progress right???
Ashley, Is this a super active puppy or an older dog that is more calm? Does the dog bark or yelp a lot? My stepson wasn't too sure about my dog until I explained to him that HE was in charge when he walks Daisy. Now he bosses Daisy around instead of having someone boss him around.
