I'm curious how many parents on here have children on behavioral meds and how old were they when they started? My son is 3 almost 4 we recently started home schooling for pre school and I am seeing things that worry me that he won't be able to function in school. A few times his therapist have brought this up. I know his doctor will give them to him if asked but I am curious the pros and cons of behavioral drugs in a child so young. I also no it's normal as a toddler for him not to have an… read more

We did the diet first, and many different types of therapies. We recently bought a hyperbaric machine as well. My son underwent an EEG which was positive for seizure activity. He was placed on medication for that which also evens out mood. He is also on something for acute anxiety, but at an extremely low dosage. He's really a different person and able to enjoy life much more now, but it was a very hard choice to make. He's 14 and had no meds before this year.

I get that. There are definitely scenarios in which meds are the best path. You have to do what is best for you and your child. As for your mental health... take care of you.

Hugs hun...youll get no judgement from me....i worry about the same thing with liam.
He will have an in home schooling till January then they are going to reevaluate and see if he is ready for public school....he has recently gotten more aggressive and also has a difficult time sitting still...he is non verbal and doesn't take directions well either...im not sure on behavioral medication bc we haven't come to that yet...but for my older son (non asd ) who was diagnosed ADD...he was prescribed a medication
to help him concentrate that ended up making him nausiouse and sleep alot...it was a negative side affect for us...maybe not for others as all kids are different...so he doesn't take meds anymore.
I also have a nephew who when in school took meds for adhd bc he couldn't sit still...had out bursts and had issues paying attention...i remember him telling me that the meds made him less hungry and mess with his stomach a bit...they had to sometimes change prescription and change doses...he said it did help..but there were side affects he had to get use to....i know it's might not be exactly the same or type of behavioural meds you mean but this is really all I know on the subject...im sorry I can't be of more help.

Tried meds briefly (days) but adverse effects were not worth it to me. I am happy with that decision still. 8 years later. Because we are medication free and doing okay without them. We have our ups and downs but yeah... My boys are medication free at 11 and 13.
Also, that option is still available should it become truly necessary.

We're going through the pros and cons of medication right now.I'll tell you that so far we've tried two meds recommended by our doctor& therapist.Unfortunately the side effects on my 6yr old 42lb son far outweighed any positive effects! We were looking for something to help Hayden cope with his crippling anxiety but have at this day and time decided medication is not OUR answer.Best of luck, no matter what you choose. P.S. The meds we tried were Hydralazine& Prozac .
