Refusal Of Meds
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

How do you handle your kids refusing to take there medicine? I've crushed it and put it in a drink and I've even put it in his food and he still won't take it. Any advise

This is a tough one, my daughter would not take anything for meds fir a while. We got the doctor to prescribe the liquid versions and we put it in her drinks. We had to go with unflavored or grape because she liked grape drinks. She could taste the smallest amount of anything different. After that we started to crush the pills and mix them in with her drinks but we couldn't let her see us do it and we had to crush it up really fine and then let it dissolve fir a while before giving it to her.

We could never mix with food she could taste it right away. She now is 11 and takes hers in pill form now. The school got her to do it by an ABA based reward system and it has done wonders for her. She no longer questions it and just takes them. This took a long time so it isn't a quick fix.

We are lucky that both of my sons have been able to swallow pills from a young age. It took lots of practice with things like mini m&ms before trying real pills. I've never crushed pills. That said, my youngest son is like a very (VERY) drunken sailor in the morning before he takes his meds and EVERYTHING is hard-impossible until the meds are in his body for 40 minutes. And of course that effects everything from eating before meds kick in, toileting, and yes...taking the medicine without dropping the pills, throwing the pills, spilling the drink he is using to swallow the pills etc. Inevitably it is a disaster of some sort. Not because he can not swallow the pills, but rather without the ADHD meds in his system he can do practically nothing he is otherwise capable of.

I do give him a liquid herbal tincture at night sometimes that tastes horrible to him, but he will take it in a small amount of banana milk (banana and some type of milk blended) or chocolate milk. But at night my drunken sailor is somewhat less disregulated than in the morning.

Sorry I can't offer more...if it were me I might try crushing it and adding a small quantity at a time to a spoonful of something very rich, sweet and concentrated like Nutella.

Liquid?
Just give it to them straight, but have a Favorite Chaser ready for them.
It may take a few times before they get used to doing it, but they will.
