A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Getting him ready for school and tells me “ I need to change clothes because I pee on me, I’m sorry mom, is cause I forgot to go to the restroom” so I’m just standing there likewhat son really and now that he’s in school I’m thinking is he just being lazy or whats going on did he really forget to go to the restroom? Someone help does this happen to anyone else?

My son is 8 and he has had 3 accidents this year at school. I think they are both a little lazy and a little putting it off till its more of a urgent need. What I do is pack and extra pair of pants and underware in his backpack that way he doesn't have to come home and change. Good luck!

I also have a nine year old son that simply doesn't hear his bodily needs... Please be happy if it's only urine he gets on himself. #knowyourpain :o( We still send a change of clothing with our son to school everyday just in case. He doesn't always need it but I'd rather he have it than try to wear the school clothing.

I know we always have him try to use the restroom before dressing...after eating...before leaving the house... We even have bathroom breaks setup in his IEP to help reduce the amount of work for the teaching staff, especially in the beginning of the school year so he can relearn the route to the bathroom!

Please remember not to get angry at him too... I'm sure he's embarrassed too. My showing empathy instead of anger has REALLY made a big difference in his trying to NOT have accidents, it's been kind of amazing! Good Luck!
