They switched my son's migraine meds yesterday. Previously he's only been on chewables and liquids. The ones they're switching him to are only available as tablets. They're not huge but he doesn't seem to care. The nurse I talked to really didn't seem to get that ASD makes this way harder to deal with than other 8 year olds.
Oh boy. We had a very similar issue with our son as his doctor prescribed him a pill instead of liquid/chewables or even capsules that could be opened and sprinkled. I wish to say we had luck with our little guy, but he has sensory issues and could find the pill every time. He just couldn't figure it out. But, we tried several methods that may help:
1. Try hiding it in pudding/apple sauce and asking him to swallow instead of chew.
2. Have him chew up some food and then put the pill in his mouth with the chewed up food and then swallow all of it own. (this is how my husband has to swallow pills -- he still has a tough time, even today!)
3. They have a cup you can purchase on Amazon that helps for pill swallowing. You put the pill in the cup, have them take a drink and it empties with the liquid.
Wishing you luck!
Thanks guys. After much questioning of various people, we used cake decorating sprinkles of all things to practice! You start with the smallest you have and work your way up. It took a little while but he got the hang of it. He was so proud (so was I). He's successfully taken his meds a few times in a row now.
