My son is a senior in HS. We just had his 3 year re-eval. While it went well, transition of course came up. When you look at traditional transition programs, many of those students need life skills training, job coaches, and maybe structured work situations. My son is higher functioning than that. It's almost like he straddles the line between his ASD and being neurotypical. He needs help and guidance in many things, but not so much, does that make sense? Since you are in Illinois, there is a program out of Highland Park called http://aspiritech.org that will train HFA to do software QA and also employ them. I'm not sure if that is the type of thing you are looking for. I grew up in the Chicago area and if I were still up there, I would look into the program.
There are also college programs that are oriented specifically for students on the spectrum. I believe ECU has such a program and SIU is also supposed to have a terrific program, if I recall correctly.

The thing I'm finding, though is that for guys like ours, it is almost like they are stuck in the middle: They are too high functioning to qualify for many of these life skills certificate programs but not functioning enough to send off to college.
Hope this helps some. Good luck!
He's not placed at his home high school. We know he needs coaching in interview skills. We know he needs reminders for other aspects of employment. We know he needs help with finance management (personal). What we don't know is if his home school has an appropriate program. We do have an appointment with his case manager and academic adviser/guidance counselor on the 10th. I just dont know exactly what to ask for.
