My pediatrician does not have blood draw in her office. We went to Quest yesterday and we left because, even though they said they do pediatric blood draws, he was very resistant in a way that I thought would make him never want to get his blood drawn again if I forced it. They also didn’t seem to have anything special for kids- no numbing spray, no quiggles like they say they have on their website- she said they don’t do quiggles anymore. Where do you go to get a successful blood draw? Or… read more
We have had issues with Quest and I am also concerned about him having negative association. We go to the children's hospital and they are wonderful. They are great with blood, rays, etc...

if my son is playing a game on the copmuter or ps2 and he loses he has a complete meltdown, and i try to calm himm down but talking to him only makes him madder and holding him makes it worse so then my dad(who doesnt understand autism) comes to the bedroom(which has no door on it for me to be able to shut, and tells me to just spank his behind. But I dont want to teach him to hit or slap any more than he does already, anyone got advice, i sure could use it
Just let it run it's course and try to "ignore" it, making sure he can't hurt himself by matter-of-factly removing objects that could cause him harm.
I don't think Ohio does. They see autism as a gray area. I had asked about having to stay home with my son since he absolutely doesn't like my mom babysitting. They said that wasn't possible unless he… read more
I am trying to find prgrams and learn more about my son, he has PDD, but there seem to be no programs or anything for his age group. Does anyone know of something that may help? Especially with the fact that he seems to pick at himself to the point he makes himself bleed and then he will pick the scabs off. I can't get him to stop.
The Elmers Glue was a GREAT idea! Sorry it didn't work, but it might for someone else. :)
My son has never been interested in drawing, coloring, writing or anything of that sort. We buy him coloring books and crayons, and he would rather flip through the pages. We bought him an easel and he will use the chalk or dry erase markers but the majority of the time he wants us to do hand over hand with him. He can spell now with wooden letters, but still no drawing or coloring or scribbling. I know he's only four, but has anyone found any useful techniques to encourage fun ways (or any… read more
The FleXion pen is nice for written work since things can be erased when the ink is wet.
What do you encourage for independent play. Be have drawing and puzzles down but can't seem to find anything else she'll take interest in. She's almost 3 and electronics are not an option at this time.
Musicial instruments is a thought. I'd love for her to learn to play something. :)
I had a friend that this past year was also my sons preschool teacher. During the year I never really noticed that she seemed like she became real distant. The other teacher had mentioned to me that my friend did not really know how to handle Kade when he had his meltdowns. I honestly did not say anything I figured my friend would ask me if she needed help I trusted her and Kade seemed happy enough with school. So now that school has been out two months for Kade and the lack of text messages… read more
First of all, maybe your son needs special teachers who are trained to deal with children with special needs. Speak with the school! Request that your child be placed in classes where the teachers are… read more
Personally, from the autistic individuals that I know who are adults now have had nothing good to say about it. I work with parents who are mixed on whether they support it. I have one parent set on ABA therapy being her child’s only chance at a more “normal” life. I of course am very respectful of parents personal decisions but if there is anything that could help me understand more about the huge downsides or huge upsides, I’d love to learn so that I can relay any and all information I can to… read more
Agree. I saw some increased negative behaviors with one of the aides although it really wasn't her fault and she was working really hard, just more of that my child didn't seem to vibe with her and… read more
Has anyone ever had to hospitalize there child for such bad behaviors and aggression, These kids get bigger and stronger if anyone can help me it would be appreciated. Thanks
You should not feel that way I am sure you are doing the best you can. You also do not have the training or the ability to give your child 24/7 care, you need your rest time to.

it seems to me that almost every one I speak with via internet or where ever, ask what type of meds my child is on? WHAT do you mean .NONE... I refuse to suppress the issue for the time being . I am talking about BEATING THIS ISSUE . I am fully aware that at this time there is no cure for autism . so with that said why ? make it easy on you. what about them are they ok? this is mainly for the younger children I am reffering to because I just need to know I fully don't understand.
Yes, I believe in getting to know them and embracing what makes them unique @A MyAutismTeam Member
