Hello everyone, i am in this group. My 19 month old son was diagnosed with mild autism last week. The psychologist recommended ABA therapy. He is already getting speech and occupational therapy twice a week for half n hour each session. I am not sure how many hours of ABA therapy would be good for him. I live in new york. His speech and occupational therapist are telling me to start with 10 hrs per week but i am thinking of 20 hr per week. Is 20 hours going to be too much for him? Your feedback… read more
@A MyAutismTeam Member I am in the UK so it's not ABA therapy, when my son started therapy he was over 2, he would not engage for therapy, the very basics of engagement were not there, no eye contact, he wouldn't sit in a chair, wouldn't do hand over hand, he wanted to stim and bang his hands off walls. It mostly ended in him getting too upset. This went on for a while so I decided to pull us out for a break. My son cognitively was not ready for therapy. If you feel when you start therspy there are other issues preventing your son learn ie my child had constant gasterointestinal issues, get the medical side under control firstly. Can you imagine having a sore tummy and someone trying to make you learn? Asd kids are at different stages, different levels on the spectrum. I let my son lead me and we are breaking through now at 40 months. It was a combination of ST and OT together with props like sensory swing a d trampoline and floor time. For us at this stage our son is just starting to show affection to cuddly toys, he can high 5 us, he has been letting us enjoy music together with a greater attention span. We are very happy. Our son is on the severe end.

We started Home base ABA when my son was 17 months and now he is 18 months 15 days. ABA therapists just play with him and he starts learning. What I think they are giving him play based ABA and not forcing anything.
Thank you everyone..your feedback has been very helpful.
Ps...I have to say this, your child needs familiarity, even if the 1st time it's only to enter the room, meet the therapist, feel the surroundings, take it in. Next visit build it up and so forth. As a 1st time mom I couldn't physically imagine my child being in anything 20 hours per week, the time when they are very small like this is so precious. Enjoy your toddler Naz.

My son also 18 month old and diagnosis as mild Autism. We started with 15 hours ABA and Mon-Fri 3 hour a day. He cries 1 hour and plays 2 hour with therapist. After we involved then we have seen some improvement. So, everything depends on you.
