Our Three Year Old Has His Evaluation Appt Coming Soon, What Can I Expect?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Our sons evaluation appt is soon and I am wondering what to expect? What happens? Do we get results that day? Are there any questions I should ask them? I am a first time mom and new to everything.

Hello KrissyMichelle,

Most likely you will get a nice list of recommendations to put in place for your child. They should also recommend therapies and or pre-school goals. Is your child registered for a pre-school yet? Head Start has some amazing programs , as well as many schools offer 3/4 year old pre-school classes for Special needs children. There the children get speech, occupational therapy and physical therapy all in the comfort of their regular classroom. Good luck at your appointment!

Hi there, is this for an evaluation pre-diagnosis with a developmental pediatrician? If it is, I would highly suggest calling the office where the evaluation is, and ask to speak with one of the nurses or someone on the team about what to expect, results timing, etc. They should be able to answer any/all questions you may have. That's what we always do!

Thanks everyone! Trent's evaluation was Friday at a place we have here called Sisu and the atmosphere, the people, the children all had a great vibe right when I walked him in and his evaluation went great, I was very excited to know they are actually a school and not a doctor office type feeling. Anyways, he is three years old but his gross motor skills/development are that of a 24-36 month old, his speech is there though delayed, I learned he either has sensory processing disorder or at least sensitivities, his OT therapist didn't tell me an actual diagnoses right then but did let me know sensory is one thing she noticed with him, and later on they will do further testing but didn't specify on what. He does qualify for weekly therapy sessions and once insurance approves we will be starting. Very exciting for me! :)

The place the appoinment is at hasn't told me much about what therapies he would need, the type, or specifics. All I know is his behavior, eating habbits, devolpment schedual all seemed "off" to me for him being 3 and his pediatrician reccomended us to challenged child to have an evaluation done, and right now that is all I know which is why I was wondering what they do during it and what to expect after. Thanks everyone for the advice and links and info :)
