Anyone With Any Advice?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've only asked our sons doctor about this and got nothing from her so I thought why not ask here. Our son refuses to sleep on a bed. He will only sleep on our living room floor with his favorite blankets. He also refuses to wear clothes at home. He will only wear clothes when we leave the house and as soon as we get home he takes them off. Does anyone have any tips to get him to sleep on a bed and with clothes on? At least a t-shirt?

Thank you! We have a lullaby DVD he really loves that's been helping him fall asleep. My dad told us yesterday he had this kinda trouble with his older son and started telling him that the TV in this room has to be shut off at 8 so if you want your show you have to go in your room and within a couple weeks he was sleeping in his room so we're gonna try that with his lullabies and see if we can get him to go sleep in his room. My husband promised to build him any kinda bed he wants so we've been looking at pictures online to get him to pick to see if maybe that would help he's found two he likes and really wants so hopefully we can build it this week and have practice getting him in his room. Thank you all for all your advice we will be trying them too!! 💙

@A MyAutismTeam Member that's what I was thinking that the bed is to soft. He won't lay on the floor in there only play his bed is on the floor just in case he does fall he rolls around alot in his sleep. The living room is usually pretty dark we let him watch a movie to fall asleep because if he doesn't he gets up and plays he also has ADHD so the movie calms him along with melatonin it usually works. We've tried laying with him in his room to show him it's okay but he just grabs his blankets and goes to the living room

Thank you! I've heard alot of good things about those bed tents he really loves dinosaurs I found a dinosaur one on Amazon for 25 I might have to get him. We've tried three different types of sheets we've tried without sheets we've tried sleeping mats and nothing will work even his favorite blankets on the mattress won't work so we're wondering if maybe it has to do with the mattress? Anyone heard of that?

And we tried some clothes with his favorite character and let him pick but he takes them off in like 5 minutes and when we put them back on it sets him off we got him some big boy underwear today gonna have him put them on over his diaper he won't wear pull ups they rub on his leg and it drives him nuts

Hello does he have a favorite character or theme..or item he loves a blanket on the or related item on bed . my son likes colors music and loves Mickey it was peppa pig my daughters build a bears anything with it blanket pajamas etc or something familiar put it in bed with him pillowcases etc... we use to let him have a choice in clothing even though he was basically nonverbal but he would point and be happy about that..I use that to comfort him for bedtime and his music or his little shows he liked ... I also have tried singing etc... before I found out what really worked for him it was combination of things... now my son is good with his Mickey car it’s a small one he keeps by his pillow at night or somewhere near him... if he goes to sleep without it he gets up searches area covers room etc and gets and back to sleep...lol I have brought several in case he loses it... and we have and it WORKS my son is four and has been diagnosed with autism... and I know the struggle with the clothing thing... I would just consistently put it back on now I can say after months of that he keeps all his clothes aside from socks on the whole time indoors .socks he will leave on a while .. we use to wake up in the night and he would be naked no pajamas or nothing sometimes he was younger it would be a mess to wake up to... I also tried onesies for a while because he couldn’t get them off that worked well to get him in habit and I tried to keep the house cool or have him just have a pull-up underneath and sometimes naked with pull-up only and then we graduated upward ... I tried to find out was it a sensory thing comfort thing or something etc ... I also would tried to get in a routine when I saw he wanted clothes off and make it a bedtime bathtime ritual that this when we take clothes off and have him take a long bath or a shower to maybe cool body down and then I would put clothes on that seem to work...so he had a time to be naked for a while with a appropriate reason....I hope this helps I did a lot of other things but I think this was the things that stuck most... he was diagnosed 14 months ago but right around 2 is when I saw the behavior changes speech regression etc...
