Bottle Transition
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Hi-- my son is 3.5 and is in feeding therapy and applied behavior analysis. He has a feeding disorder so his primary source of nourishment is PediaSmart via the bottle. He has started to take some purees (one kind) and then gets the bottle for nourishment. We need to transition him to a cup but he is so aversive to anything near his mouth except for the bottle that I'm not sure how we can do that. He can't drink from a straw and will kiss a cup and pretty much any food but will only open his… read more

I am reading the blog right now because Sam is 4 and still uses a bottle at night and when he is sick or upset. During the day he uses the plastic cups with lids & a straw. I was trying to decide if I am being weak on this issue because his teeth have been pushed in by the bottles. I think if your child is not getting sufficient nutrition you do whatever you need to do. In my case I think I already know I need to work harder at it because he is eating enough. My heart goes out to you all with the eating issues. Sam has come a long way from the colicky premie he was but he still only eats about 6-7 foods.

It was years ago for us now. At Babies R Us, I had found one cup that was like a transition cup. It had a wide lip that he could put his lips on but wasn't a bottle.

Also, on the feeding therapy. We did feeding therapy for a long time with an OT. We did not have success. I ended up doing a 3-4 hour evaluation with him in Dallas, TX at Our Children's House. Four years ago, it was one of four in the country. The doctor, speech therapist and psychologist all work together to come up with and modify a feeding plan along with answers to feeding obstacles. It was very hard but worth it. We stayed in the facility for a month and did 4 feeding therapies a day. They started, I could watch through a 2-way mirror sometimes. Then they let me be in the room to watch and learn, the final week I was feeding using the techniques and they would coach me after. We went through a "honeymoon" period where he did good at home, then started refusal behaviors. I kept up the plan and 2 weeks later, he was doing better. Now, 5 years down the road, he eats all meals...any food I serve. We just recently faded the last rewards.

Everything that I have done has been one step at a time with failures and grace between.

Good luck, it is hard but you will get there. Have you read The Gut and Psychology Syndrome?

Thank you!! I will look for that cup too, he is VERY particular to one bottle and one bottle alone, meaning the type of bottle. But I am willing to try anything for a transition.

That sounds very similar to what we are going to look into for Liam. He needs that extra boost and we think that this feeding program seems like the logical next step. That is awesome that he is doing so well with eating.

Yes he will, I am excited for every little step he makes. No I haven't, but I will get that book!!
