Potty Training 4.5 Year Old
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son will use the potty at times on his own but is not very consistent. He is not fully verbal , tends to mimic Daniel Tiger’s potty song when HE decides he wants to use the potty. Other than that he usually goes in his pull up.

Can you guys provide any tips such as apps or a routine that worked for you?

Thank you !

Potty every hour be consistent. Be prepared to take Pull Ups away in the daytime. Buy 10 - 15 pair of underwear. Only clean him up in bathroom. Use the moments of cleaning as a teaching moment.Always praise eliminations. Put nighttime pull Ups on minutes before he goes to bed. Also in the morning remove Pull Ups immediately. Also when he has accidents in hus underwear change immediately. The goal is for him getting use to be clean..

You will wash a lot in the fist few weeks. But honestly my son will be 5 next month. He has been fully day time pottytrained since December 2017. Aftet a week in Underwear he started having accidents once or twice a week until no more accidents.

It is hard work but so worth it. Also your son might enjoy picking out his big boy underwear.

My son is 6 and we are just starting to see some progress on this area. Potty train has taken over our lives for the last few years. It is mainly trial and error as far as what works. Stay in a routine especially for #2. We give probiotics and prune pops to help and make him sit and try after every meal w/ his tablet. When he goes too long we give him an enema. Only now is he starting to go #1 on his own and he is finally beginning to let me honestly know when he needs to go #2. All 3 of my typical kids were potty trained by the age of 2, it just takes our ASD kids much longer to get it. We found help at the autism center near us as well. If things get to rough you may see what is available in your area. ( We went to Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta) Best of luck!
