How To Handle Outbursts That Start In The Morning And Last All Day
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi all
I’m new here and hoping to get some ideas as we are out of ideas. My 4 year old son is high functioning autistic and every morning he wakes up between 4 and 5am and immediately begins to swear repeatedly, yells, screams, jumps on furniture and runs around hits, kicks and spits on me and his younger brothers. I’ve tried putting him timeouts (he screams and cries for these but refuses to sit in them). He actually wants to be spanked-which is an absolute last resort if he really hurts… read more

No offense. His behaviors are more common of low functioning ASD kids. Does he understand that they are wrong and why?

@A MyAutismTeam Member yes. We’ve been on the wait list for about a year now.
@A MyAutismTeam Member that’s an interesting thought. I’ll have to try it-providing he actually sleeps in past 4/5 am and doesn’t come to wake me up lol

Have you tried scratching his back when he wakes up? My son, who is high functioning Asperger's, says that it helps him a lot. Sometimes a firm foot rub helps him too.

Find out if you have a regional center in your area. They will contact you and get the process started. It takes patience because it could be slow based on demand. We filled out paperwork almost six months ago and have our first in home visit tomorrow.

No. I’m not entirely sure where to look for something like that for him. He does have an upcoming assessment with a child psychology place for his behaviors. But, I’m not sure if it’s the same thing. Is there some place I should be looking for that or do I need to ask his pediatrician for a list of places that do ABA?
