Autism And Nudity
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

So, my Sweet Lily has been running through the house naked, every day, for the past two years. Just today, she decided to venture out into the garden, stark naked. Anyone else have a problem with their ASD littles stripping their clothes off at/in inappropriate places? Does it ever stop? Will I ever see the day when my child can successfully wear a complete outfit for longer than a trip to the local dollar shop?

Our son is always just in underwear at home. The second he gets home he strips down, regardless of people being at our house. Sometimes he will want to go outside, but we don't allow it. When he's out he wears clothes, just fine until he is overwhelmed, upset, or gets his clothes wet. Then he tries stripping, and we have to try and stop it, or get him undressed in the car. We don't always carry extra clothes, unless we suspect he will get wet somewhere.

Our system just naturally came about. There are moments out that he refuses to wear clothes, but they are few and far between. I think talking about how inappropriate it is can really help. And show her that other people don't do it. Sometimes that helps a great deal, if they see others wearing clothes, she might want to as well.

Still Angel's preferred outfit! We made a compromise, she can be naked all she wants in her bedroom but must put on clothes or a robe before coming out. We have "comfy" clothes for home and "outside clothes for community outings. She is very very picky about what she'll wear.

Social stories always worked for Aidan. They just need a gentle suggestion that it is inappropriate. Try letting her pick out the clothes. The sensory issues, some clothes bother their skin.

We typically let her, unless she decides she wants to wear her winter coat and boots in 110Β° weather.
