My Nonverbal Child Is Somewhat Reading....
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

In the last few months I think my son who is nonverbal and 6 years old grew interest in books. They are the same set and he loves being read to. A few weeks ago I saw him reading it... some words he would say were not understood and others were. Wondering if this is something that has benefits and will help him in the future? It got me happy cause he is remembering words being read to and even putting sound affects and emotions into it. thoughts?

That’s great! Encourage it. I read several articles by non verbal kids who could read and type and were able to express that lack of speech does not mean unintelligent rather that the frustration from lack of speech are factors behind certain autistic behaviors.

I didn't think my 8 year old daughter could read due to the autism. She's verbal but is in special ed. We thought she didn't have the ability to sit and learn but she proved she could read and does it on her own. I got choked up when she first started reading aloud because I thought she just knew the story but she knew individual words in the book.

Communication isn't just speaking but reading and writing as well. It can't hurt.

My hats off to all parents finding ways to get their kids to read. I would like to know if there is a specific book series you know that is suitable for autistic children ages 10 and higher. Thank you all in advance

I am so glad to hear your son is reading. One common characteristic of all successful people in the world- they are voracious readers. So I think you really encourage him to read as much as he likes to. Have a good day!
