Urinating On Floor
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter is almost 9, diagnosed with ASD. She has been urinating on the floor every single day. She is always grounded from her xbox, her tablet, her leap pad, everything I can think of. Then as soon as she gets these things back, I have to take them again because I have discovered another puddle of pee in her room. I have told her countless times this is not okay and she has to clean it up. When she is sent to time out, she bangs her head against the wall and hits herself in the chest. My… read more

Her banging her head & hitting herself is a sign of severe anxiety and inability to cope with what is happening. She likely doesn’t understand why she is peeing on the floor, but I don’t think it’s purposeful. Punishing her by taking things away from her won’t work to eliminate the behavior. Autistic children don’t stop behaviors with typical punishments used for NT kids. Try consistently redirecting her to the bathroom when she goes on the floor.

Our son has stopped wetting overnight,he was impacted due to his bland diet, sometimes constipation can play a big issue in regards to continence, as they never really feel empty.

Hi,

You didn't mention that your daughter is having any physical ailments but my son has a lot of gastrointestinal issues(chronic constipation) and began wetting himself well after being potty trained. He was wetting himself because he had become so backed up. It could be that she is experiencing severe constipation or something called dysfunctional voiding.

Hang in there.

I had to try countless of things before I found how to approach unexceptable behaviors for their own good....and help them by redirecting ... but I found that making small books myself of the particular issues they are having with lots of visuals step by step helped them realize how and what can be done and sometimes what mom ( me ) expects them to do. I also show images of what the consequences will be like . For example in my 9 year olds case would be feeling poop in his pants and being all dirty which he does not like anything wet to be on his body ... Hope you find a solution that fits your family soon my best wishes

Punishment is not working because she does not understand why what she is doing is wrong. Agree with @A MyAutismTeam Member
