My son will be 3 in about 3 week. He is eligible to start the school system next week as we had his IEP meeting thursday, however our insurance approve him for 40 hours of aba therapy starting next week as well. I am rrying to determine if it is best to send him to aba all 40 hours or incorporate school somehow as well. He is currently non verbal which is our biggest chllange as he has difficulty communicating needs and cannot follow any direction.
Yes, public schools need to allow these therapists into their buildings as long as they pass a background check. I would recommend 1/2 day school (with ABA therapist) and 1/2 day at home with therapist. Good luck!!
I would highly recommend doing ABA 40 hours. I wish I had done that with my son. If I had a re-do I would go as heavy as possible on the ABA to get him talking as soon as possible and able to understand receptive language as soon as possible. I would focus heavily on receptive and expressive language at home when not in ABA. Going to ABA 40 hours per week will probably get him talking pretty quickly. A child won't learn much at preschool if he has no interest in listening to words or using words, but with intensive therapy that can change. He will get so much more out of school if he is somewhat listening and responding to words.
My daughter does both- she does developmental preschool provided by the school district where she receives SLP, OT and ABA (M,T,Th,F) and we also added private ABA, OT and Speech. It is a good schedule for her bec she gets the therapy, educational, social interaction with other children. She started the program at 3 and is turning 4 next week. It works for her and has helped her tremendously.
Can you ask the school if you can send him with an ABA therapist that your health insurance pays for? They may say no but it canβt hurt to ask. That way he gets best of both worlds
