Does anybody child/children with autism goes to a regular school instead of a disability school or a school for autistic children? If your child/children are going to a regular school how is your child/children responding to the ajustment?
My son was not diagnosed until he was in 5th grade. He attended a Catholic school. It was very hard for him. Several years later he did online schooling. When he graduated from a public high school, he did so with honors. He is now studying chemical engineering in college. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I am glad that I tried a variety of education for him. It was a challenge, but a success in the end.
I think the experience is very different for different kids. While there are some that have adjusted well and thrived, there are others that have had very negative experiences to the point of regression. The school environment, teachers’ attitude, tolerance and understanding are key to the childs’ progress and adjustment. You’ll have to keep a close eye, constantly advocate and make them aware that you’re on top of things. If your child is nonverbal you’ll have to be even more vigilant. My daughter started kindergarten this year in a regular classroom and so far so good. She loves it.
My son has aged out of school; but I kept him in regular school with an IEP and Speech, O.T. supports. The early you start interventions, the better, also: BE A FIERCE ADVOCATE.
We use a charter school. He goes twice a week.
My child who had lost his private school due to its closing had to go back to public school and it was terrible for him he’s back in private school again and doing great
