Hippo Therapy
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone tried hippo therapy? If yes, do you believe it was beneficial to your child? Did they accept insurance and did insurance cover any of the cost?

Also, was thinking about maybe karate or swimming. Has anyone’s child took part in these or any other sport/s that helped with socialization, independence and confidence building? Thank you.

@A MyAutismTeam Member. My son is 17 I take him to the gym to workout with a personal trainer. The gym helps him to focus follow directions and did amazing for his aggression. He also plays basketball for 45 min every other Sat when the weather is good. I hope you find what works best for your child.

Hippotherapy is not covered by insurance for us. $40/30 min session. Our 2 1/2 yr old son has been doing it since Sept. He is non-verbal, but seems to enjoy it. Since he has so much therapy, it's his one 'enjoyable' outlet and we consider this worth it even given the cost. After one session, I felt as though he had increased attention for a couple of days following, but that may have just have been a fluke. At any rate, we will continue for now.

All the places around here don't accept it, except for one that actually does have an OT and speech therapist working with your child as they ride.

My son is taking swim lessons--we found a place that let's him work at his own pace, has fewer students per class. British Swim School. It's a chain, so maybe there's one in your area? He's coming out of his shell and enjoying the water more.

My son did therapeutic horseback riding age 8 thru 10. After about a year he said, " you know mommy I talk more now that I have been riding". He stopped because "boys don't ride". Low and behold, back at it at 17. His anxiety was so high and he wanted off Prozac. Weaning off as he rides....also using cbd oil.guess what...He just started a job for first time. In ELEMENTARY school did aikido. Great due to all grappling and rolling. We self pay for riding, but some centers have scholarships and some insurance may pay. Good luck
