Compulsive Throwing Away Things.
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son wants to throw things away. I have no idea why he wants to do this. But he wants to throw things away so badly that he actually will rip up items so he "justify" throwing them away. He throws away books, clothes, food, etc. It happens every day, throughout the day, and multiple times per day.

He's 18 so I can't physically stop him. I am able to delay him. He also gets sneaky about it to the extent of getting up during the night to throw things away.

Ideas anyone?

Angel Sense
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone ever heard of Angel Sense? If u have have u tried it? My son will be starting classes in September with BCIU/early intervention and im worried how he will do and how teachers will treat him. It has a tracker if ur kid goes missing and u can even listen in on conversation wherever they are. It snaps to clothing or backpack. Wanted to know if its worth getting for the price and is it really reliable. Its rated 5 star's. Let me know what u guys think.

You could look into Apples Air Tags. They are really just for gps, and don’t have video or audio capabilities, but you can hang or place them almost anywhere. If your child has a tendency to take off… read more

to Late Diagnosis: did the neuropsych office let you know how long you might have to wait? Does he see a pediatrician? I ask, because you can try to go to a medical dr such as the pediatrician who… read more

Has Anyone Trid Neurofeedback?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just read about it yesterday. My son is 8, high functioning maybe Aspergers, he makes good eye contact with me but not so much with other people. He plays well with other children most of the time, has some anxiety and some attention problems but nothing that we feel needs medicating.

So I am just wondering if anyone has had good, bad or neutral results from this. I am loathe to spend a lot of money on false hope cure stuff, but if it is a genuine treatment option I would do anything to… read more

Backpack
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is going to be 9 I am trying to find him a good backpack for school. He has a dedicated device he takes with him to school and now with winter snow coming snowpants are a must. So i am looking for something big enough that is durable and has a pocket for a device. Any suggestions?

I like the backpacks sold at Costco. They have a pocket I put my laptop in.

What Treatments Work?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have two children with autism, (a five year old daughter and almost 3 year old son). My 11 year old brother also has autism and my parents seem to have tried every single biomedical treatment, diet, etc. and they swear by them all. My daughter is in a verbal behavior kindergarten and I would like to try to add another approach to try to help her but am unsure of where to start. Anyone have any suggestions or words of advice about treatments?

Whi Is My Child Throwing Food Away?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 15 year old high functioning autistic child (gender neutral) who has been self isolating for 1 year and has disordered eating is throwing large amounts of food in the bin. This is impacting the rest of the family in terms of dood not being there for others and me financially. I would like to 1) understand why they do it and 2) hear from others who have managed this successfully. Thanks

I recommend researching the way autism effects eating disorders. This is just normal behavior for someone with disordered eating. It’s not exactly a product of autism but it does contribute. Here’s… read more

@michele18- homeschool kids socialize too, it's just not as demanding to do, and there are escapes. It also allows your child to have 100% customized attention and curriculim.

Help! My 14-yr-old Son Has Severe Pica!
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 14, and has been eating (mainly) his clothing for at least the past 5 years, but it is progressively getting worse. He started picking at his socks and eating the strings. Then it was shirts, pants, underwear, shoes, you name it. Now it is an everyday occurrence, sometimes eating half a shirt sleeve throughout a day. And he's soooo sneaky about it; it's hard to catch him. He keeps saying, "Stop it. Stop it." He can't. His doctor feels that he could have OCD or high anxiety… read more

My child did this and still does from time to time. It was/is due to a severe iron deficiency.
