We are trying to figure out ABA therapy but are concerned that all of the therapy, daycare and pre-school is too much. Our son is 4 and my husband and I work full time. Right now our son is dropped off at daycare at 6:30am, gets picked up by the bus and goes to pre-school, is dropped back off at pre-school at 12:30 for lunch and nap, then stays at day care until my husband and I make it back from work at about 5:00pm. He has been assessed for ABA and they are recommending 20 hours per week. We… read more

ABA therapy is crucial when they are young. It helps children learn to do the simply tasks they have lost because of autism.
My son had a program that went from 7am to 7pm 7 days a week. The teacher came to the house got him ready for school, taught him skills like brushing teeth getting dressed then took him to school.
In the afternoon a new teacher took over at the end of the school day bought him home, did after school skills at home taught him how to eat at the table, shower, get ready for bed and left at 7pm.
It was intrusive but he learned how to behave and after the tantrums eased he started to learn.
So in my opinion, you cannot have too much ABA.
Once he got into school like 5th grade and on things changed. ABA made him anxious and created too much anxiety.. ABA is good for young children.
My son is 22 now and has high anxiety from ABA, OCD and mood disorders.
Don't be afraid to do ABA when young its a life saver

@A MyAutismTeam Member I liked your post. I agree about ABA therapy being so helpful. But there may be other services that work better for other kids, I just know in my situation it has been great. My youngest got services at the age of 4 and now he is 7. Many people don't know that he is on the spectrum or doesn't believe it. He does have meltdowns and obsessions that they don't see. He gets ST and OT at school. I requested an evaluation for OT bc of his writing and sensory issues. He opted out of OT when he was in daycare. Well, he qualified and thank goodness, I asked them to check him. It seems like people aren't tuned in to the kids or they don't care. I have to be on my toes. My oldest is finally getting ABA too. It never was available till this year finding a company that just started doing this. He is 11 years old and more delayed. He is enjoying the one-on-one time and works great for them. He gets 15 hours weekly. My 7 year old gets 20 hours weekly. We have not much of a social life, it is stressful, but is worth it in the long run. I don't let people bother me with making comments about all those people in my house. It is what is best for my kids. I don't want my kids to fall through the cracks. Sorry so long, I haven't been on here in a while.

I think that you can always try it and if it is not working you can cut back. Or are they will to just start with less hours since he is getting that type of preschool? I wish I got a diagnosis earlier I just hear so many great things about early intervention. My son is five and he is about to start ABA therapy in January we have been recommended 12 hours a week. My son does a full day of kinder and then will have therapy after school 4 days out of the week. I think if I worked it would overwhelm me because I am overwhelmed thinking about it as a stay at home mom of four kids. There is a parent on here I can’t remember his name but he has made me feel better about it. He says it has helped his son so much and the hours decrease over time. You could prob see the comments on my post about ABA therapy and asking about how much time other kids are getting. I hope you figure out what works best for your kiddo and your family. πŸ™‚

Why can't the ABA meet him at his preschool during the week for the length of time he is there? I mean you don't have to do the full 20 hours a week, but what a great opportunity to do ABA with other typical children. It would be ideal as they should be demonstrating the appropriate behaviors, play skills, and language skills you'd like your child to learn as well.

ABA is not for all, some kids do better when it is child lead.
