How Do You Manage Aggressive And Self Injurious Behavior?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 2 1/2 year old has moderate-severe autism and is non verbal. A lot of the times he will pinch his arms (sometimes occasionally biting them as well). Recently, he has started head banging a lot and will repeatedly hit his head on the hard wood floor over and over again or other objects. His ABA therapists and OT say to block It with my hand but I feel like that isn’t effective in dealing with it long term and there are times when I’m not close enough to block him from smashing his head. Weighted blanket helps with my daughter during meltdowns. When she is in the mood for sounds, music helps her too.

my son was non communicative and diagnosed as being off the charts when it came to being autistic...although the self injury didnt manifest until he was about 10 or so.... very aggressive head banging and biting himself as well as his mom and me....we got him a bicycle helmet and eventually a full motorcycle helmet ..... even though he hated anything on his head for the most part he would tend to calm down when we put the helmet on him.... he also had a body sock that he loved and that also seemed to soothe him....good luck to you MonaLisaSmile

My son's therapists have requested pillows and chew bracelets for him. I also keep a chewy and kerchief attached to his clothes and try to redirect him to that. He also gets time outs in soft areas. As for prevention I'm trying to get a "sensory diet" going for him, I'm working with his OT on it. This involves stimulation and calming activities. At the moment brushing then joint compressions every 2 hours, though he's sick at the moment so I haven't picked it up again. Is he doing speech therapy? Success in communication could help him a lot, it's slow going with our guy but we're doing object communication because the words aren't coming out though he knows them. Hugs.

I had never heard of a body sock. Just looked it up though. It does look very useful, may help my daughter too. I will have to try one for her. Thanks for your helpful advice to the other lady. It may help my family too.
