My son is 4 and minimally verbal. Any language he has is not very functional and often sounds much like baby babbling. We started using Gemiini video program with him and his vocabulary is slowly increasing. The videos use discrete modeling and repetition of words to teach vocabulary and skills. Good stuff on Gemiini. We used that and he also looked at the mouth. Go with your gut. If you can, try to do 1:1 speech therapy outside of school in addition to what he gets at school. Someone told us- try to get as much therapy as you can. Also, we had posterior tongue tie surgery with a tongue-tie specialist and his speech has improved - in other words, people could only understand like 60% of what he was saying before and now they understand like 85% of the time. Many doctors looked at him and told us he had no tongue tie- boy were they wrong. That alone won’t improve his speech but if you have a feeling there’s something mechanical holding him back, keep investigating.
Thanks for the response! I actually already started the process of getting additional speech therapy, just waiting for scheduling. When your child was seen by the tongue-tie specialist, did you start with a referral by PCP?
