Mirrors And Kids With Autism
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son age 3 whom is on the spectrum , is getting in the mirror and pulling his pull up to look at his private area. He climbs in the bathroom sink when he can or tries to get in my daughters room because she has a mirror that stands to do this. Has anyone encountered this behavior and what can I do to help?

What Should You Say If Another Child Says "You Don't Look Like You Have Autism?"
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son was playing with a neurotypical child and felt the need to say "I have autism." The other child said "No you don't." I am happy that my son is accepted by this child but saddened that there is this "stereotype" of autism. Each and every child is gifted, not handicapped. I explained to my HF ASD son that some kids don't understand that it is a very broad spectrum. I also explained that he could tell this boy that kids with autism are smart but their brains are just wired differently… read more

That other child probably doesn't really know what autism is. I would take that exchange with a grain of salt. Just like if your son said "I have a unicorn" and the other child said "No you don't"

Help Getting My Child's Shoes On!
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son goes through streaks where he doesn't want to wear his coat or shoes. Usually it is a seasonal change so I get it and am patient while we work through it. He can go a month and not have any problems, and then all of the sudden his shoes are "not tight enough". We were doing really good and now for the last few weeks he refuses to wear shoes. I have to hold him down to try to get them on him but that doesn't always work because the minute I have them on he kicks them off. He also started… read more

Thanks May! I have tried adding socks and that has worked...for three days! :( We have occupational therapy on Monday so I am going to see if they can help with it as well.

Is It Concerning For My 10 Yr Old Daughter To Think She Is A Mermaid
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 10 yr old daughter has always been very imaginative and creative. When she was little she had an imaginary friend, and she would dramatize scripts in her head, and often believe certain scenarios she made up were real. Her fixations are mermaids and fairies. She has often gone back and forth with believing they are real. She loves to pretend the tooth fairy and santa claus are real, and I just play along because she loves it. However, I don't know if I should be concerned because she told me… read more

Maybe it would be helpful if there was a certain time of day (like for one hour per day after school) that they are just left completely alone. I think it's always helpful to manage expectations. If… read more

Compulsive Eating / Binge Eating?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Any experience with binge eating or compulsive eating behaviors? Since my 10 year old daughter started puberty, she has been exhibiting some compulsive eating behaviors. Food is obviously a comfort to her and a sensory input for her, but I am trying to watch the amount and the quality of the food she eats for her health. She definitely has impulse control issues and doesn't seem to know when enough is enough. It isn't every day, but when she is stressed. It is worse a few days before she… read more

If the behavior is only just before her period and her eating habits are otherwise relatively normal/healthy I wouldn't worry about it
I personally don't eat large portions, snack or have other bad… read more

How Do I Start Building Family And Friends Support Network?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello everyone
We are at the very beginning of our journey... Since testing takes time, I wanted to be proactive and do as much as I can on my own and with help of our family and friends. How do I introduce them to the issue? How do I ask for appropriate help and support? What is the right thing to say and what is not? Is it ok to ask for monetary help (costs of therapy, dietary supplements, therapeutic accessories, etc) if yes, how to do so in a delicate manner
Thank you for all of your… read more

Ok, I get where you're coming from. I agree, then just an honest approach will be best. Throughout that whole time with my kids, I just presented everything very matter if factly to people

Suggestions On ASD Clothing Or Coping Ideas
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My six year old ASD daughter has meltdowns everyday over getting dressed. She doesn't like to wear panties, socks, or long sleeves (when she has to wear a coat). Her other clothing issues are easy to deal with, she doesn't like tight pants or elastic waists. Everything has to be soft. I've tried several different kinds of socks and panties to see what if one works. The last socks I found that work are no longer available anywhere near me. Anyone know of brands that work for their kids that have… read more

We've tried those with some success. They make some for girls. I have her in panty covers they're made to wear under skirts(we called them spankies in high school) they are just like those, but they… read more

Hi all,

The BCBA in my son's preschool wants to implement the Whole Body Listening by Michelle by Michelle Garcia to target the following behavior;

Does anybody know about it? What other things have you guys used to target the following/

Thanks,

In case I wasn't very clear, Whole Body Listening is part of the curriculum from Social Thinking.

I Need To Ask About "adults" With Autism Using Their Condition As An Excuse For Things Such As Not Working Or Failed Relationships?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 25 now and from what I understand he doesn't like doing his job. He is living with his dad and stepmother and giving them grief. He won't talk to me. Meanwhile I have an adult friend also with Aspberger autism who pretty much just text messages me. Most of his messages anymore include statements to the effect of being an 'aspie' and how I have had a negative effect on him for various reasons. Mostly him taking me literally. Both my son and this man seem to have a history of… read more
