Accommodations In School For Writing Issue
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi MAT family. Has anyone asked for accomodations in school for writing? My daughter is in kindergarten and she is doing pretty well with everything except for writing. She is advanced in reading and average in math but waaay behind with writing. She can write all the alphabets and words but she is very slow and also has a hard time with maintaining the size of her words. Sometimes she spells words backwards. Also she fills out the whole page with just a few words. Can’t color inside the line as… read more

There is such a thing called Dysgraphia. I didn't realize my son had it until he was much older than your child. Facebook has a group called Dysgraphia Support Group. Take a look and see if it fits what you are seeing.

Yes you can ask for that, the OT could be your first contact. They see what she is going through, and can suggest shortened assignments, etc... Hopefully it will come with time and practice, with the OT. remember that fine motor skills are commonly behind for many children and adults on the spectrum. Seems like she is getting exactly what she needs though from your posts. Glad she enjoys writing and coloring ! You are lucky for that !!

That sounds like dyslexia. My son is 13 and still has writing problems. He won't do OT because "it's for babies." (I asked and asked his elementary teachers for referrals but kept being told he'd grow out of it. He didn't.) With a 504 or IEP plan you can ask for audio textbooks and speech-to-text programs. My son is on hospital-homebound due to migraines, so I have big fights ahead of me, I think. Particularly when he gets to HS.

My son is in occupational therapy at school for writing. It is common for kids on the spectrum to be slower to learn how to write. The speech pathologist and therapist described it as a part of language. We first learn to talk and socialize and than writing. If your child is delayed in socializing in most cases there writing is affected. My son is improving so much. You can request occupational therapy at IEP meeting. They work with my son on using scissors drawing shapes and writing sight words my son is in kindergarten too.

Thank you @A MyAutismTeam Member , I’ll look into it. She may well be having it. I plan on getting a neuropsychological eval for her this summer and hopefully they’ll be able to tell me whether she has it or not. She sometimes writes backwards, not just spelling the word backwards but writing the alphabets backwards as well. It’s just bizarre.
