Naps
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is two. he takes a nap every single day and its like a 3 hour nap and then he goes to bed around 9. Well after his nap he wakes up so upset. He is kicking, hitting, crying, and throwing things. Nothing I do will soothe him or calm him down. Everything after that just makes it ten times worse. This can go on for anywhere between 20 minutes and an hour. I need help. Someone please give me some advice or help me understand why this happens. Its an everyday thing and I cant cut out naptime… read more

My son is 4 and he used to do what you are describing when he was 3. Have you tried anything with diet? I cut down in dairy significantly as well as cut his nap to 2 hours. It helped. Not sure which one or if it was the combination of the 2. I will tell you that everything was harder when he was 2 years old. It will get better. Hang in there.

My son literally did this EVERY TIME he got up from a nap. Hes 4 now so is not as bad just whiney. But man i remeber he was so hard to console. The only thing that helped calm him down is hugging him really tight then playing his fav tv show Wallykazam same episode saved on dvr. So maybe have something he really likes ready after a nap. I honestly dont know why some are like that but over time I realized my son would get overwhelmed by his own emotions and didnt know why he felt them and he felt them strongly. Hope that helps

My daughter went thru that phase at that age. She is 3 now. I could literally time her naps to 3 hours exact. She would throw tantrums and seem miserable after she wake up. I kept trying to find different activities that she liked to redirect her attention. Sometimes it worked & sometimes not but eventually things changed. Now she doesn't take naps at all and goes to sleep between 8:30 and 9 pm. She still initially wakes up in a bad mood but after i tickle her and sing a few nursery songs plus let her watch a little YouTube she's good to go.

I find my son does better with shorter naps and goes to sleep earlier. They say never wake a sleeping baby but if he is miserable anyway when he gets up on his own no harm in trying right ?😬 Sometimes I need the break though and let him get up on his own. I find he is much more pleasant if I wake him by rubbing his back a little and ask him if he want some water or milk.

My soon to be 4 year old is that way. His siblings know to stay away from him when he wakes up from a nap. Anything and everything sets him off.. God forbid I sing or joke :D !!
iPad is probably the only thing that’ll prevent it. He is NT. His sister who has ASD wakes up with a smile
